This is the updated PHTA-2 Standard for Public Pool and Spa Operations and Maintenance, approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) on July 27, 2026. The limited revision improves consistency and coordination across PHTA standards. To eliminate duplication, specific recreational water quality values were removed and replaced with references to PHTA-11 Standard for Water Quality in Public Pools and Hot Tubs/Spas, the authoritative source for the applicable technical requirements.
PHTA-2 is a landmark aquatics standard, providing public health officials, industry professionals, and code officials an easily adoptable set of guidelines for the operation and maintenance of all types of public aquatic venues. The standard focuses on critical areas of operations and maintenance including inspections, operating permits, water quality, hygiene facilities, indoor/outdoor environment, and other requirements.
